Information on printing

Pilling Printers Ltd. can offer charities the chance to keep their printing costs to a
minimum.

Of course all charities want to keep their costs down and printing is no exception.
However to do this efficiently whilst ensuring the best possible quality of printing
demands an understanding of how print costs are applied.

With a number of years experience supplying print to charities as well as public bodies,
such as NHS Trusts, PILLING PRINTERS LTD are experts in assisting their clients to
keep their printing costs to a minimum.

There are ten golden rules of print buying which are as follows:

  1. Plan your printing early. This ensures that you have time to shop around for the best deal available.
  2. Know exactly what you want. Having only vague specifications can mean that you end up paying hidden costs. It can also mean that you are not receiving like for like quotations from all printers that you contact.
  3. Write a clear brief of what you want from your printer stating size, colours, type of paper, quantity, delivery etc.
  4. ALWAYS OBTAIN AT LEAST 2 QUOTATIONS. THIS WILL ENSURE THAT YOU ARE GETTING A FAIR AND COMPETITIVE PRICE. ALWAYS SHOP AROUND!
  5. One colour is the cheapest. Two colours will cost a little more, but 3 or 4 colours will increase your cost considerably.
  6. The greater the quantity that you are able to print the lower the unit cost. Design/artwork costs are a one off charge that will be the same should you order 1,000 or 1,000,000. ALWAYS NEGOTIATE VOLUME DISCOUNTS
  7. There are many different types of paper. Get samples to see which you prefer. Remember the cost of paper can vary dramatically depending on the type and finish. This can make a big difference to your overall printing costs.
  8. Response mechanisms such as freepost card can be very effective. The Post Office does have specifications for size and paperweight etc. Make sure you and your printer are aware of these.
  9. Don't forget delivery costs. Most printers quote ex. works which means that you have to pay for the cost of delivery. Bear this in mind when obtaining quotations.
  10. Ensure that if you do not have to pay VAT for your printing that this is not being charged on your invoice.
