Living Legators


The Legators to your charity should sit at the top of your donor giving pyramid i.e. they are the most important donors you have and therefore must be treated as such.

Creating the idea of the living legator looks at keeping these individuals in the forefront of the fundraisers mind.

Whether it is an official programme or whether this is just used to explain the idea, the living legator should feel they are included in the organisation, they should be a little more special.  Here are some ideas:-
 

  1. Make sure they are one of the first (and know it) to receive the annual report with a personal letter from the Chairman/Chief Executive.
  1. Invite them to a special event each year where perhaps there is a presentation by the organisation on the future of the charity.
  1. Give them a questionnaire to complete and acknowledge or answer questions.
  1. If you are able to begin an endowment fund this is often a great way to fundraise via legacies, because you are offering the legator the ability to help the Charity in perpetuity via their legacy- which is attractive because it offers a sense of immortality.  Unfortunately this can only happen if the organisation has enough revenue to be able to do this.
  1. Update your Living Legators as to what legacies have funded over the years.  Tell your contacts at the press.
  1. Celebrate your Living Legators while they are still alive and recruit them onto your volunteer team that asks for legacies!
