The Fundraisers End of Financial Year Resolutions

It is always nerve racking to look back on a year in fundraising.  Even with plans and financial budgets and forecasts in place fundraising rarely ends up followingth the initial plan.  However planning is about being as organised as possible to allow the ability to foresee challenges before they become problems and to have space to allow for unexpected opportunities.

It is important to take some time and assess past performance against future forecasts.  Here are some helpful points.

Evaluate:

  • What went wrong.  Why it went wrong, what you could have done to avoid the situation or change the situation and what was beyond your control.  What systems could be put in place to help either avoid the situation or change it to an opportunity. Or what training could be useful.
  • What went right.  This is vital to look at what went right and highlights of the year.  Why they went right, who helped make it successful, can it be done again, can it be improved upon.  Is there a learning process for other team members from this.
  • Weaknesses.  What weaknesses either in individuals or in team members showed itself.  What can be done about them.
  • Strengths.  What strengths exist in indivduals or in the team.  Can these beput ot better use?  Are there particular experts in there areas who could conduct training for others (for example, volunteers, team members).

Financial Information.

  • What information you did use.
  • What information did you collected that you didn't use.
  • What information you could do with for this year
  • How can systems be improved.
Management

  • Do you have clear financial targets
  • Do you have team targets
  • Do you have targets that aren't purely financial (e.g. making speeches in the community etc).
  • Does the team have a workplan for how they are going to achieve their targets
  • What support with they have.
Conclusion

Assessing at the end of the year the past and the future is vital to begin to understand where improvements can be made. Without assessment no learning takes place by individuals and by the team.
