Interview techniques

Pre-interview

Get and familiarise yourself with the job description
  • Draw up a list of strengths and weaknesses with regards to the job description
  • List questions you may have regarding the job and the company
  • Concentrating on your strengths, practice describing yourself and your experiences.
  • The interview is likely to have a structure of some sort and will probably involve: education, training, work history, leisure, health, personal circumstances and ambitions.

The interview

  • Get a gut feeling for the interview. For example, how formal is it, how well have they prepared, and try to respond accordingly.
  • Be aware of the time constraint - make answers brief and to the point
  • Be alert to non-verbal communication both from yourselves and the interviewer(s).
  • Keep good eye contact and try to nod appropriately. Try to show positive emotions without excess.
  • Show your ideas without trying to teach the interviewer how to run the organisation or the interview.

Post interview

Write down what your thoughts were on the interview, what questions you were asked and what questions you did not know how to answer. It is likely you will be asked these questions again.

Questions you may be asked

  • What are your strengths/weaknesses?
  • What is your present situation?
  • What have been your greatest achievements?
  • Why do you want this job?
  • What else have you applied for?
  • How have you spent your time whilst being unemployed?
  • How do you feel about overtime/time away from home?
  • When did you leave your current job?
  • Why did you leave your current job?
  • Why are you not working?
  • What did you not like about your last boss?
  • How have you kept up to date with new techniques?
  • What experience do you have of office technology?

  • What part of your job did you like the most/least?
